Paint The Cliffs

Searching the rocky coastline near Contos Beach for a photograph was a blast and challenging. The coastline is so huge and diverse. Got some nice light to end this particular day in Australia’s south-west region. I love exploring and photographing this region and look forward to exploring again.

Boranup Forest

I had beautiful conditions while photographing the Karri tree’s of Boranup Forest in Australia’s South-west region. Next to no wind, beautiful warm morning light, and fog that stayed in the forest most of the morning. As I was wondering through a section of the forest this tree caught my eye. It was alone, and had great foliage on the forest floor around it. Boranup Forest is only about a 30 minute drive from Margaret River. The trees are just stunning and I am so glad I managed to make a photograph of the area that I am proud of!

Sugarloaf Rock – a different perspective

‘Sun Kissed’

I always want to capture a unique image if a location has been photographed by every man and his dog. One thing I typically do is not look at a lot of other images that way, when I arrive I can see it without other peoples images in my mind.

It took a number of attempts to capture this Sugarloaf Rock photograph. I had this idea of capturing Sugarloaf Rock as the mornings first light reached over Cape Naturaliste and hit the top of the rock. My first attempt went fairly well. I had big swells, great light, but no clouds. I returned about a month later and on the first morning had the light, but not enough swell or clouds. The following morning I was feeling confident and when I arrived to see the conditions, I was thrilled. Big swell and clouds in the sky. When the light hit the rock I was wrapped! This particular frame I am so happy to have captured. Being setup near the water and low with my wide angle lens can always be risky. This particular wave nearly swept me and my gear in for a swim. As it crashed I hit the shutter and as soon as it finished lifted the tripod up in the air and held on to some rocks. I didn’t realise I had captured this until I got home. Waiting for these to return and hopefully have conditions line up was all worth it!

Point Picquet, Dunsborough

‘Angelic’

Point Picquet is a stunning bay located along Cape Naturaliste in Australia’s south west region. The Cape has dramatically contrasting coastal scene on either side. The West facing side coping the brute force of huge swells, while the bay-side are calm, crystal clear waters with white sandy beaches, protected from the elements. Every time I am in the area the colour of the water still impresses me. This particular day was no exception, blue water, blue skies, and some nice clouds in the sky. Capturing this image I walked out into the water and setup my tripod so that it was almost completely submerged. I just had to keep an eye out for incoming waves to be sure I didn’t give my camera a bath.

Japanese Maple Tree, Portland

This maple tree in Oregon really is quite brilliant! As with a number of the others I photographed there. Though t black and white would help really enhance the trees branches against the back-lit leaves. What is interesting and often hard to tell from the photos it that this tree is really quite small! You can’t even stand up under it.

Antelope Canyon Photograph

This photograph of Antelope Canyon captures the intense glowing colours created by the reflected light, red sand stone, and beautiful light beams making their way to the canyon floor. This was a place I had been keen to visit for years. I knew it would be stunning but as I walked into the slot canyon it really did take my breath away. It was even more stunning than I had imagined.

Pinnacles, Western Australia

‘Diamonds of the Night’

Western Australia’s Pinnacles are a place I have only ever photographed under a clear night sky and it is not hard to understand why. Situated two hours north of Perth, the skies are very dark and on a clear night, they are filled with stars, galaxy’s and the Milky Way. The landscape itself has always felt a little otherworldly to me and in my eyes, works so well under the night skies. I had captured this pinnacle once before but didn’t get what I was hoping for so a return trip one night was in order. Photographing the night sky has its own set of challenges but the results can be very rewarding!

Alone

This black and white, lone tree photograph, is something that I feel needed to be part of my collection. A simple, clean photograph of farmland here in Western Australia, just outside of Perth. I love the space in this shot and felt a black and white rendition would suit it. On this particular day when I realised the flat white skies were going to be around for a while I decided to drive out of town to photograph this tree that I had passed countless times on camping trips over the years. I think maybe I should have done it sooner!

The 12 Apostles

‘Sisters’

This 12 Apostles photograph is a composition I had envisioned and hoped would be possible before ever visiting the location. I was so happy to see that the setting sun was going to line up right in between these two apostles. After photographing rainforests all day in the pouring rain and even hail, the skies cleared just enough to get a good sunset. I wanted to go to the 12 Apostles and capture a photograph different to the look out panoramic view I had seen many times before. What a stunning drive the Great Ocean Road is, with a stunning coastline and waterfalls scattered through the forests just inland.

Photographing Beauchamp Falls

‘Beauty of Beauchamp’

Beauchamp Falls photographed in ideal conditions. The whole day it was raining and cold and at sometimes it was even hailing. Might not sound ideal but for this kind of scene it was perfect. the forest was stunning. So lush, soft lighting and the rain allows the forest colours to really pop. It just meant numb hands and waiting for brief moments of lighter rain to get the camera out and set up the shot before packing it away again out of the rain. I was blown away by the stunning forests and waterfall scenery a short drive from the stunning coastline that the Great Ocean Road follows. What a spectacular part of Australia to visit and photograph.

Japanese Maple Tree, Oregon

‘Hidden’

The setting sun bursts through the leaves of this Japanese Maple Tree in Portland, Oregon. Some of the trees were still greener at this stage while some had turned. With the sun back lighting the leaves they appeared even more yellow which worked in my favour.

Antelope Canyon Photograph

‘Arcadia’

Antelope Canyon in northern Arizona is a spectacular place to photograph. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit these slot canyons and witness the spectacular glow that is found within them. ‘Arcadia’ captures the variance in colour temperatures within the canyon that are seen more dramatically by the camera as the intense warm light reflects off the background walls and the foreground rocks appear in much cooler light. A stunning location that I do hope to visit again one day!

North Beach Photograph

I had this moody photograph of North Beach along Perth’s coastline in mind. I captured this and it had the exact water movement that I felt was important to the shot. I then returned the following night and set up the same composition however got a much more colourful sunset. At first I thought that would be great, but after looking at the files I realised I preferred my original idea of a moody scene and the colour from the second night just didn’t do much for me.

Multnomah Falls, OR

This photograph of Multnomah Falls of Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge is a very simple clean black and white rendition of these massive falls. These particular falls are popular among tourists. I avoided capturing the upper portion off the falls to avoid the bridge. This simple composition is of the lower section of the falls. Columbia River Gorge is filled with stunning waterfalls tucked away in the beautiful rainforest. Such a spectacular place that just amazed me!

Bear Creek, Colorado

‘Felicity’
Bear Creek photographed as the final light of the day reflects off of the distant cliff face, creating a warm glow throughout the scene. I love to revisit this waterfall just outside of Morrison Colorado and am sure I will again next time I visit Colorado.

‘Run To Forever’

This photograph was captured along the City Beach coastline in Perth, Western Australia. Summer had arrived very suddenly and this day was a perfect reflection of what summer is to me living in Australia. I had been visualising this shot for a while and although a simple composition it took quite a number of attempts. These clouds were perfect and the water was stunning. The yacht was just a bonus!

Upper Antelope Canyon Glowing

Photographing Antelope Canyon is an experience I will never forget. Driving across Arizona I felt like a kid at Christmas. I was so excited to witness the magical glow found in these slot canyons. This photograph was made in Upper Antelope Canyon. I was primarily photographing the light beams that this canyon is known for, however this composition could not be passed up!

Lower Antelope Canyon

‘The Light Above’

After a couple of attempts at getting exactly the composition I had in mind I got it. Spending two days capturing the colours, glowing light, and rock formations that are Antelope Canyon was an absolute blast! I wish I could have spent more time there but I have no doubt I will return!

Japanese Maple Tree

‘Shaded’

With my camera underneath this Japanese Maple Tree I was able to capture the leaves that appear to glow in the ambient light after the sun had disappeared behind some hills. The branches of this tree reaching out provide a great contrast to the bright greens of the leaves and grass around it.

Fairy Falls, Oregon

‘Fairy Tales’

This photograph of Fairy Falls was on my second hike up this particular trail. It is quite a steep track but when you arrive at these falls it is all worth it. They are named very appropriately. I love the way the water appears to burst out from the forest above. I had never photographed or even visited a forest like this before and just couldn’t believe how stunning it was.

Antelope Canyon Photography

‘Divine’

The dramatic colour temperature differences seen in Antelope canyon. The camera records these tonality difference slightly more dramatically than the human eye making for a striking photograph. I have never seen glowing light quite as brilliant as I did here in Arizona.

Laguna Beach Photograph

‘Laguna Mystique’

Laguna Beach has a beautiful rocky coastline. On the day i visited it was overcast however I found it worked quite well in creating a moody and mysterious scene with the white wash creating a hazy effect.

Columbia River Gorge

‘Lush’

This tree caught my eye. It was catching reflected light and the underside of the leaves were glowing while the rest of the scene was in the shadows of the gorge. Columbia River gorge is an amazing part of the world. The area is so green and an absolute joy to visit!
